Gollum
The story of the Hobbit Smeagol is a tragic one, yet in the end, Frodo was ultimately thankful for him and forgave him because without Gollum's treachery in those final moments, the Ring would have never been destroyed. Gollum began as a hobbit named Smeagol who committed murder when by chance, while fishing with his friend Deagol, the ring of Sauron was discovered on a riverbed. After obtaining the ring, a long slow process of corruption began, eventually poisoning and twisting the hobbit into the vile creature Gollum. Yet despite the corruption, a part of Smeagol always remained within Gollum. Gollum admired and hated Frodo, and served as a mirror image to Frodo of the evil that potentially lies within everyone. In the end, it was two hobbits...Gollum and Frodo who fought over the ring and together, though by seemingly an accident, managed to destroy it (although Gandalf would not consider it an accident as he even once told Frodo that Gollum would still have a part to play).
